The Dos and Don’ts of Swimming Pool Maintenance

  • Written by NewsServices.com

One important thing you need to know after building your pool is how to properly maintain it. Great maintenance not only makes the water safe for use, but it also enables issues to be spotted and fixed early. Moreover, it's more enjoyable to relax in water that is sparkling and pure than in dirty, slimy or murky water.

During maintenance;

Do remove all debris

Use a skimmer to remove any debris that has accumulated at the surface of the water. Catching debris before they sink could prevent clogging of the filters.

Do brush the surface

Scrub the surface at least once a week. This will not only reduce the accumulation of algae but will also improve the aesthetics of your home.

Do clean the filters regularly

You need to remove debris from the filters regularly so they can continue to function effectively.

Do increase the water level

The water level can reduce due to evaporation or leakages. If the level of water is too low, it can destroy the pump and you may need to replace it. Don’t allow the water level to go below the skimmer level.

Do test the water’s PH

Test the water’s PH using a test strip. The PH should range between 7.2 to 7.8.

Do cover the water

If you live in a very rainy area, just cover the water because rainwater increases algae infestation. Moreover, covering the water prevents any debris from accumulating.

Don’t do the following;

Don’t only vacuum

Vacuuming is an important process and you should do it regularly. However, you should also brush and scrub the surfaces, especially places that are hard to reach such as the steps, corners, stairs and behind ladders. Brushing the surfaces once a week will prevent the growth and accumulation of algae and bacteria.

Don’t allow water to become too acidic

If the water is too acidic, it becomes corrosive and can damage tools such as liners, filters, pumps and heaters. It can also harm your loved ones by causing redness or skin irritation.

Don’t shock the water during daytime

When you shock the water during daytime, the efficiency of the chemicals may reduce because of being exposed to the sun. Do it at night to give the chemicals enough time to do their job. Moreover, you should shock the water twice a month if it is not used a lot, and once a week if it is used a lot.

It takes work and discipline on the side of the swimming pool cleaner to keep it in great shape. It needs to be scrubbed, vacuumed, shocked, filled with water up to the appropriate level and skimmed. All these practices ensure the water is safe for everyone to use.
