Good Learning Environment for Your Students

  • Written by Marife Boiser

Whether children are physically at school or the comfort of their homes, having a good conducive learning environment is essential. It's safe to assume that the traditional classroom set up has become obsolete and has, for possibly decades, failed to excite young minds.

Learners today require a space that meticulously caters to support and encourage thinking. Likewise, a learning environment should also be a safe space for trial and error. It should fully embody the philosophies of a good education. Students prefer a space that pushes them to do more and thinks more critically while providing a sense of achievement. Learning spaces should also be a place where students can interact with their peers and instructor.

Importance of Learning Environment

One of the most creative and critical aspects of teaching is creating a positive learning environment for your students. The broad term: learning environment, encompasses multiple layers of teaching. Here’s how you can create a good learning environment for your students.

Supportive and Positive Learning Culture

A learning environment should be able to make students feel connected. Students who have a sense of accomplishment and camaraderie are less likely to break under pressure.

Support systems such as mentorship programs and peer activities are vital in reassuring students. These can also be used as a medium for learners to check up on their fellow students and guide them in the long run.

Provides Safety

Any learning environment should be a safe space for learners. Before expecting students to excel academically, they should first feel physically and mentally at peace.

A safe learning environment makes students feel respected, welcomed, supported, and acknowledged. By building a safe environment with The King’s College, you're also developing a positive learning culture.

Addresses Every Learners' Needs

As an instructor, attending to your student's psychological and physical needs is part of your duty. Competence, personal power, security, and belonging are some needs that, when met, can increase learners' progress.

Not only will this type of learning environment make your students happy, but it will also incentivise their good behaviour and focus on learning.

Cultivate Positivity

Learners respond better to positive criticism. Although their work might not be right on the money, as an instructor, you should be able to show your appreciation of their effort and motivate them to know more and do better.

One reason why students drop out of a course is due to bullying, teasing, and harassment. If they feel safe and adequately corrected, students will be able to see their areas of growth without the stigma.

Conclusion

Although students need an effective and conducive structure to learn, a good learning environment for your students should be more. It should be able to pique your student's interest and stimulate their growth.

Learners will always positively react to positivity. When their learning space provides support, acknowledgments, and camaraderie, it boosts their self-esteem and lets them focus more on the task at hand. A good learning environment should make students feel physically safe, mentally rewarding, and emotionally supported. Catering to all these is no easy task, but remains an essential aspect of teaching.
