When art imitates…dessert
- Written by Victorian Government
Art and design meet sugar and butter, at Melbourne pastrychef Pierre Roelofs’ Dessert Studies events.
Each week at these events, Roelofs invites a creative to present him with a piece of work, which he uses to inspire a new dessert. The creator is invited to attend the event, eat the dessert they inspired – and then reinterpret the dessert back into art.
Artistic collaborators include architects, illustrators and even a taxidermist. His Tower Dessert (pictured) was created in conjunction with architect Andrew Maynard.
“I immediately thought of gingerbread when I saw photos of the wooden shingles that are on the sides of Andrew’s Tower House … and so the first dessert study began,” Roelofs said. “I made edible shingles from royal icing flavoured with lebkuchen spice. Royal icing is used to decorate gingerbread houses so that was a nice little connection.”
The Dessert Studies evenings are held at Milkwood Café, 120 Nicholson St. East Brunswick throughout August. Tickets are $55 for four dessert courses.
