Released 01/06/2015
The National Convention Centre will continue to be attractive in the highly competitive conference market with $5.4 million over two years for refurbishments in the upcoming ACT Budget.
The funds - $2.7m in 2015/16 and $2.7m in 2016/17 - will improve visitor experience of the centre and are necessary to meet current professional and technological expectations. Works include new carpets and curtains, painting, upgraded digital signage, new seating and extension of the hearing loops, a makeover for the bathroom facilities and minor fit out items such as new ovens and fire suppression measures. The investment will also replace obsolete technology including security systems, movable walls and lighting.
The upcoming Budget will be for Canberra – renewing our city suburbs and delivering on the resources our community needs. This Budget will ensure Canberra remains the world’s most liveable city – and a place all Canberrans can be proud of.
The ACT Government is committed to ensuring Canberra is a viable market for national conferences and events. We have maintained our election commitment to make the case for a new convention centre in the capital, and we will be seeking support to help finance such a major project.
In the year to December 2014, the ACT welcomed 513,000 domestic overnight business visitors for a total of 1.17 million visitor nights. The business events sector is an important factor in attracting business visitors to Canberra, and growth in this sector is an integral part of achieving the goal of growing the value of the visitor economy to $2.5 billion by 2020.
