Released 13/08/2024
The Government has released the transport update to the ACT Infrastructure Plan, outlining work completed since 2019 and further short, medium and long-term investments in the Territory’s transport system.
The release of the ACT Infrastructure Plan Update: Transport outlines projects the Government will continue to invest in to make it easier for Canberrans to get from A to B, whether on foot or by bicycle, car, bus or light rail.
This includes the extension of the light rail network south through the city to Commonwealth Park, the National Triangle and on to Woden.
Other initiatives include the Garden City and Kingston Cycleways, the Molonglo River Bridge, and road upgrades right across Canberra.
The release of the transport sector update reinforces the Government’s commitment to delivering the transport options needed for our growing city, which is on track to reach 500,000 people by 2027.

Quotes attributable to Chief Minister Andrew Barr:
The ACT Government is continuing to deliver the job-creating infrastructure and services for a growing Canberra.
The release of the latest ACT Infrastructure Plan sector update reinforces our commitment to increase transport options for Canberrans, now and into the future.
This includes one-in-a-generation projects like Canberra’s light rail network, as well as significant upgrades across our suburbs.
Quotes attributable to the Minister for Transport Chris Steel:
The ACT Government envisions a transport system that supports a liveable, sustainable and connected city with flexible and reliable journey options.
We understand Canberrans need a range of transport options to suit their needs, whether travelling by public transport, car, bike or on foot – or a combination of these.
That’s why we’re investing in a range of projects to increase choice and accessibility, while reducing traffic congestion and emissions.
Significant projects, like the expansion of our light rail network, will ensure our city has the infrastructure and services Canberrans rely on, now and for years to come.
Quotes attributable to the Minister for City Services Tara Cheyne
The release of the ACT Infrastructure Plan Update: Transport highlights a range of key road and active travel projects that will provide Canberrans with even more options for getting from A to B as our city grows.
The new Molonglo River Bridge and the extension of John Gorton Drive is a great example of how the ACT Government is creating an even better-connected city.
The construction of the bridge is supporting more than 500 jobs. Once finished, it will better connect the growing Molonglo Valley with Belconnen and the city, improve traffic safety, and provide cyclists and pedestrians with off-road travel options.
