Most of us take our home plumbing for granted. It’s only when things go wrong do we suddenly realize just how much we really depend on it working properly. When you search for local plumbing services in Melbourne, you’ll feel like they can’t come quickly enough. Some of us may learn from those issues and try to take better care of our home’s plumbing, but for many it just turns into another case of history repeating itself.

Blocked sinks and toilets are one thing, but plumbing in our homes pertains to matters of personal safety --- even life and death --- and that’s why it’s a subject we should take more seriously. It’s fine to call up the experts when they are needed, but we also need to know which of our home plumbing features are important and how to care for them.

1. Blocked Drains

Whether it’s your kitchen sink, bathroom sink, the toilet or another outlet that’s meant to take waste water away from your home, blockages shouldn’t be left unattended for long. There are a few things you can try yourself to try and shift the blockage, but don’t hesitate to call in the professionals if and when these don’t succeed.

Leaving drains blocked can prove to be a real health hazard for you and your family. It can lead to sewage overflow, but even if an overflow doesn’t occur, there is the risky presence of bacterial growth that can lead to increased disease and allergies in your home. The longer you leave a blockage in place, the more time there is for these negative impacts to build up.

2. Carbon Monoxide

Sometimes called “the silent killer,” carbon monoxide is a colourless and odourless gas that can be emitted from your home heating and plumbing devices, especially gas heaters. If you have one of these, you can’t afford to avoid proper servicing and/or carbon monoxide testing. Even low levels of carbon monoxide in the home can cause chronic health problems including tiredness, shortness of breath, headaches, dizziness and nausea to name but a few. When those levels get too high, people can even pass out and die.

Get your gas heaters, gas fires and similar appliances serviced at least once every two years by licensed and qualified professionals. Learn more from professional plumbers on Hot Water issues here. You could also look into the possibility of home testing kits that will help warn you if there is a buildup in the meantime.

3. Hot Water

This one isn’t so much a health hazard as it is a major inconvenience and disruption to your life. The advent of hot water systems have been instrumental in the liberation of humanity both from dirt as well as excessive labour in the home. Hot water helps us to wash our dishes properly, to bathe in comfort and with water that can effectively wash off dirt, kill bacteria and so on. Like electricity in our home, it’s one of the most instantly noticeable things that we miss when things go wrong. Therefore, having our water boiler properly serviced to ensure it continues to run properly is something we should all undertake.

4. Roofing and Guttering

Not all the important plumbing in our homes is indoors. If you live in a larger detached or even semi-detached property, then your roof makes use of various measures to channel water and unwanted materials to the gutters which then take it to the outdoor drains. Many residential plumbing services include servicing of the roof and gutter installations. They can get blocked up with leaves and dirt, or sometimes you might even have birds nesting up there.
