Warrnambool and surrounds
Warrnambool is the star of new Australian feature film, Oddball, which tells the true story of how maremma sheepdogs came to save the town’s little penguin colony from predatory foxes. The feature, from Roadshow Films, was shot in and around Warrnambool, and stars Shane Jacobsen, Sarah Snook and Deborah Mailman.
In real life, maremma dogs continue to guard the penguins every day and not a single penguin has been lost to foxes since the scheme started in 2006. Visitors can book tours to visit the colony during warmer months, and all year round visit Warrnambool’s Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village to meet the dogs when they are off duty.
Fans of the film can follow Oddball’s tracks along the Great Ocean Road. In Warrnambool, revisit familiar locations in the main street (Leibig Street), at Flagstaff Hill Maritime Village and along the coastal walking track between Stingray Bay and Thunder Point. Other locations to feature in the film include the cliffs of Childers Cove, the 12 Apostles and Gibson Steps.
