The announcement today that Canberra Airport and Uber have reached an agreement to allow inbound passengers to Canberra to use Uber services from the airport terminal comes just in time for the arrival of direct international flights to the ACT.

Many international travellers will be accustomed to using ride sharing services in other cities around the globe, and this announcement will enhance transport options from Canberra airport once these travellers arrive in our city.

The ACT Government’s goal in ensuring ridesharing operators are able to operate legally in the ACT was to add to our integrated transport network – where Canberrans and visitors have various options to travel around the city including buses, walking, cycling, driving, taxis, ride sharing and light rail.

Direct international flights, which will begin operation in September, will see thousands of new visitors to the nation’s capital. This will result in economic growth across the ACT and support our booming tourism sector – which employs over 14,000 Canberrans.

Having secured international flights, the ACT Government is working to ensure they are a success to encourage more flights and more carriers in the future. The 2016/17 ACT Budget including a significant investment in our tourism efforts, increasing the marketing of Canberra in key international and domestic markets. The ACT Budget also including funding to improve Pialligo Avenue in time for international travellers.

The introduction of ride sharing services has improved transport in this city, particularly during peak periods such as Parliamentary sitting weeks – complimenting existing services to ensure people can move around the city in a timely and affordable manner.

The agreement will also benefit Canberrans and domestic travellers who are regular users of ridesharing services.
