Residents in Page and Richardson can participate in a pilot program to involve the community in suburban project development participatory democracy process.

The “My little big idea” program will be trialled in the two suburbs. With up to $40,000 available per suburb, residents in the pilot suburbs are invited to share ideas to help improve community wellbeing in their suburb.

Whether it’s a street library, fitness or cooking classes, a playgroup, event or series of activities, all ideas will be considered. One winning idea per suburb will receive funding to turn it into reality.

Community members will determine which little idea will receive funding, through a community panel and public vote later in the year.

The winning projects will be funded and implemented in 2024.

The “My little big idea” initiative will investigate how Canberrans can assist government decision making about the ways their communities are supported.

It will also build on previous innovative programs inviting input from Canberrans on what is needed in their suburb and explore how participatory approaches can be integrated into existing budget consultation processes.

To be eligible for funding, each project idea needs to align with the key goal of ‘making your community more connected and resilient’ and needs to be accessible to a range of community members and stakeholders. Criteria and a submission guide are available to help guide the community through the process.

To learn more about this initiative, submit an idea or join a community panel, people can visit www.yoursay.act.gov.au.

This initiative to encourage neighbourhood democracy is a commitment under the 10th Parliamentary and Governing Agreement.
