From today, newly purchased zero emissions vehicles (ZEVs) will receive two years of free registration in the ACT.

Quotes attributable to Andrew Barr, Minister for Climate Action:

“Eligible ACT residents and businesses can apply for the two years of free registration for ZEVs purchased or acquired from today until 30 June 2024.”

“The ACT has an ambitious target of net zero emissions by 2045. Transport emissions now account for around 60 per cent of the ACT’s greenhouse gas emissions and of these emissions an estimated 70 per cent are from private vehicles.”

“Reducing the number of high emitting vehicles on our roads is significant to achieving our targets along with encouraging active travel and public transport use.”

“Reducing transport emissions in the ACT is an essential step to achieving a sustainable, resilient future for our Territory and to reach our goal of net zero emissions by 2045.”

“The ACT is fast approaching 1000 registered electric vehicles and further incentives such as the two-year registration waiver and no-interest loans through the Sustainable Household Scheme will make purchasing zero emissions vehicles a viable option for Canberrans.”

“We are also working closely with industry to make zero emissions vehicles more affordable and available and planning more charging stations across the Territory in the future to ensure the ACT will continue to be leaders in the transition to zero emissions transport.”

Quotes attributable to Shane Rattenbury, Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction:

“The ACT has been leading Australia in electric vehicle policy and incentives. For years we have had the most generous incentives for these vehicles, including stamp duty exemption for new vehicles, a 20% registration discount and access to transit lanes. From today we’re going further to offer 2 years of free registration for newly registered new and used zero emissions vehicles.

“Transport is the largest contributor of greenhouse gas emissions in the ACT and we need to reduce transport emissions quickly to achieve our emissions reduction targets. Along with encouraging active travel and improving public transport, encouraging the uptake of electric vehicles is a key part of doing this.

“Our community understands the need for practical and meaningful action to address climate change. We want to enable and support community action to reduce emissions, and making zero emissions vehicles more available and affordable is one of the ways we can do that.

“The ACT Government is a world leader on climate change action. With our 100% renewable electricity supply, the obvious next step is to shift to electric vehicles as they offer a zero emissions transport solution.

“I look forward to seeing more zero emissions vehicles on the roads and providing more support for the Canberra community as we work to our target of net zero emissions by 2045.”

This initiative is part of the ACT Government’s commitment to Climate Action through the Parliamentary Agreement of the 10th Legislative Assembly.
