The transformation of City Walk between Garema Place and Ainslie Place is now open to the community, bringing nature to the pedestrian street and providing new lawns areas and plantings.

Since works began in June, more than 3,000 plants and 560 square meters of lawns installed. The upgrade has created a place for people to stop and spend time.

In addition to the gardens, the upgrades include new grass areas to reduce urban heat, improved lighting, and more street furniture.

Local businesses will benefit with the revitalised site driving increased foot traffic and directing pedestrians closer to shopfronts, while leaving the central spaces free for people to relax and enjoy.

The grass areas in City Walk will be fenced off for a few weeks to allow the lawn to establish, with the pedestrian street now open in time for the warmer weather.

Supporting local businesses and industry has also been central to this project, with First Nations company, Rork Projects commissioned to lead design and construction.

Quotes attributable to Nathan Spencer, Project Manager for Rork Projects

“It’s an exciting project for us as we know how much Canberrans engage with and enjoy this iconic space.

“Throughout the project we worked with ACT Government and partners to engage local and Indigenous sub-contractors and suppliers wherever possible to support our city and people.
