Minister Barr: International Cricket to help boost local tourism

Local tourism is set to benefit with international cricket returning to Manuka Oval in 2019 and 2020.
Member for Murrumbidgee Bec Cody, representing Chief Minister Andrew Barr said that international cricket matches in Canberra help bring in interstate tourism and promote the nation’s capital to an international audience.
“When Manuka Oval hosts the men’s T20 match between Australia and Pakistan – our city will be broadcast across the world which is a great advertisement for our city”, Bec Cody said.
“I know a lot of local sporting fans also love getting out to Manuka Oval and watching international cricket right here in Canberra.”
“Having three women’s matches at Manuka Oval as part of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup featuring stars like Ellyse Perry and Meg Lanning is also great for young girls looking to get involved in the sport.”
“Previous games at Manuka Oval featuring the Southern Stars have been really well attended – and I’m sure Canberrans will be out in force to support the girls as they aim to become world champions.”
The ACT Government has made significant investments in Manuka Oval in recent years to ensure that the venue is well placed to host a range of domestic and international matches. Manuka Oval’s Media and Function Centre opened earlier this year and was a huge success for the test match. A new camera deck and up to 1,000 more shaded seats will also be built and ready by the end of 2019.
