Minister Barr: Record numbers of international visitors boost ACT economy

A record number of international visitors to Canberra have injected an additional $115 million into the ACT economy in the past year.
According to Tourism Research Australia International Visitor Survey data released today, money spent by international visitors for the year ending June 2017 has reached a new record level of $535.4 million, representing a 27.3 per cent increase over the same period last year.
Visitor numbers are also at an all-time high of 221,479, up 9.1 per cent compared to June 2017 figures and slightly ahead of the national average of 8.7 per cent. The growth has come from people visiting Canberra for a holiday, to visit their friends and relatives and for business.
The ACT Government continues to proactively market Canberra to international visitors through VisitCanberra’s program of activities that include Australian Tourism Exchange, travel trade and media engagement and cooperative campaigns with online travel agents and Singapore Airlines.
China continues to be the ACT’s largest international visitor source market at 21.3 per cent, followed by the United Kingdom (10.6 per cent), United States of America (9.3 per cent), New Zealand (6.8 per cent), Indonesia (4.6 per cent) and Singapore (3.6 per cent).
The ACT Government continues to work towards its goal of growing the ACT’s overnight visitor expenditure to $2.5 billion by 2020.
