Joint media release: Chief Minister Andrew Barr MLA and Yvette Berry MLA

The ACT Government is delivering on our commitment to provide better schools across Canberra by upgrading and expanding classrooms and facilities in our local public schools.

The 2017-18 Budget will invest in the renewal of Canberra’s school facilities, with $85 million for new learning spaces, toilets and change rooms, garden and horticultural facilities, heating and cooling upgrades and energy efficiency improvements.  This investment will ensure our schools continue to support high quality education.

Among the proposed works are refurbished learning and teaching areas at the Woden School, heating and cooling improvements at Melrose High School, upgrades to the front office and school administration area at Malkara School, and capacity and school administration area upgrades at Garran Primary School.

The renewal of Canberra’s public school facilities will make sure we keep providing our students and staff with great infrastructure and services to support quality learning and teaching.

As well as quality facilities for our students and staff, we are also committed to providing valuable facilities for the wider community. Public schools are more than just learning environments for our young people. They are also the heart of our suburbs, with the facilities being accessed by many local community groups, multicultural and sporting organisations.

We want to ensure that public schools remain local hubs that are accessible for wide community use. Our renewal of these school facilities will help ensure we keep our students, staff and community groups connected.

The 2017-18 ACT Budget will see the Government delivering on the commitments we took to the 2016 election in the areas that matter most to Canberrans. In addition to delivering better schools for our kids, we will invest in better health care through our 10-year health plan and better services for our suburbs, while making the right investments to renew our city and maintain a strong local economy.
