Canberra’s streetlights will be upgraded to deliver a smarter, more energy efficient network through reforms introduced to the Legislative Assembly today.

The ACT Government currently owns and manages one of the nation’s largest streetlight networks, with 79,000 lights on streets, footpaths, arterial roads and in various public parks and open spaces around Canberra.

The Bill allows the ACT Government to secure a new contract with an external contractor for the maintenance and upgrade of the ACT’s network. The reforms are designed to save the ACT taxpayer and allow for the development of an improved network that could support smart city services such as smart parking and traffic management. An upgraded streetlight network will also help reduce outages.

Improving the energy efficiency of public lighting in Canberra is a key strategic action for the Government that will contribute towards improving energy and carbon efficiency by 20 per cent by 2020; and support our move towards zero net emissions.

The upgrade to the streetlight network is another example of our commitment to deliver better services for Canberrans while contributing to a more sustainable environment into the future.
