Today I joined with generous sponsors and donors and supporters of the National Arboretum to officially open the Gallery of Gardens. This new feature delivers yet another reason to visit this ever-evolving national attraction.

These are the first four gardens in the Gallery which will eventually extend to seven separate gardens. They are the result of the creativity, vision and hard work of the donors, designers and landscapers and it was my pleasure to officially open them to the public.

I would like to acknowledge, in particular Open Gardens Australia who have funded The Open Gardens Celebration Australia Garden; John and Colette Mackay, and Joan Waldren and family, who have supported Mununja the Butterfly Garden telling the Dreamtime story of the Ngunawal elder Don Bell; Amelda and Glenn Keys who were inspired to fund and design The Labyrinth Garden; and the AIDS Action Council, who along with many supporters and sponsors were the drivers of The AIDS Garden of Reflection.

I thank all those involved in bringing these gardens to life including the designers and contractors. I am proud to live in a community with such motivated participants who have given these gifts to the people of Canberra and the many thousands of people who visit the National Arboretum Canberra each year from across the country and overseas.

A fifth - Children’s Garden donated by the Hoff family - is also close to completion, while the sixth and seventh gardens are in development.

For more information on the Gallery of Gardens visit the National Arboretum Canberra website.
