Minister Barr: ACT international visitor numbers continue to rise

More international visitors are coming to the ACT and spending more, according to the latest International Visitor Survey data released today.
Visitors from the two countries Canberra now enjoys direct flight services with, New Zealand and Singapore, increased significantly in the past year. Visitors from Singapore were up 45.5 per cent, and New Zealand up 25.2 per cent.
The reporting period, which was the year ending September 2016, only covered nine days of operations of our new direct international services, so the outlook for further growth from international arrivals is expected to be positive.
The ACT welcomed a record 206,915 visitors, an increase of 11.2 per cent – just shy of the national average growth of 11.5 per cent. The Tourism Research Australia (TRA) report showed visitor spend in the ACT was up 13.4 per cent to $432 million, which was ahead of the national average of 11.0 per cent and a record spend for the ACT. The latest results reflect the ACT Government’s commitment to growing the visitor economy to $2.5 billion by 2020. VisitCanberra’s One Good Thing After Another marketing platform and enhanced travel trade engagement are among the activities taking place in addition to the cooperative work with Singapore Airlines.
