Minister Barr: ACT Government reduces taxi fares for Canberrans

Canberrans will pay less for taxi services with the ACT Government introducing of a cap on electronic payment surcharges from 1 November 2016.
We don’t want to see Canberrans being ripped off every time they want to use convenient, cashless methods to pay for services such as taxis.
With taxi surcharges blowing out to heights of up to 11 per cent in some cases, the cap of 5 per cent will put a stop to excessive surcharging- making taxi services more competitive and affordable for all Canberrans.
Taxis remain an important part of Canberra’s transport system – supporting the diversification of the industry. The Government has already reduced costs for drivers and operators, halving taxi license lease fees in 2015, with a further 50 per cent reduction scheduled later this year.
The ACT joins Victoria, New South Wales, Western Australia, and South Australia in cracking down on excessive surcharging within the taxi industry.
