Joint media release: Chief Minister Andrew Barr and Mick Gentleman

The rollout of CBRfree, Canberra’s free public Wi-Fi network, continues with the free public wifi service now available in the Tuggeranong Town Centre.

With the federal Liberal Government continuing to drag their feet in the rollout of a National Broadband Network, the ACT Government is continuing to build a city wide wi-fi network that changes the way Canberrans use these areas.

The ACT Government has been making significant investments that will support the Tuggeranong town centre. Along with the rollout of CBRfree, the Government also recently opened CIT Tuggeranong, which will attract people to the town centre on a regular basis, supporting local businesses. The Government is also consulting with residents on upgrades to Anketell Street.

With 12 Wireless Access Points (WAPs) already live, commuters, businesses, students and visitors can now access free public internet in the area east of the Hyperdome up to the outside of Tuggeranong Library and Community Centre plus parkland bounded by Cynthia Teague Crescent.

Further areas will be added over the next two weeks as the rollout is completed.

Local MLA Mick Gentleman said that the ACT Government’s investments in the Tuggeranong town centre will support local businesses in the area.

“I’m delighted to be part of a government that is making practical investments into the Tuggeranong Town centre, like the rollout of CBRfree, that will make a real difference to local residents and local businesses” said Minister Gentleman.

“Free Wi-Fi in the area will make a big difference to the many Canberrans who work, study, or visit the town centre each day.”

“There are households down here that are crying out for better internet access. While the Federal Liberal Government continues to drag their feet on the broadband network, the ACT Government is doing what we can to ensure people have access to high speed broadband in public spaces.”

Regulars and visitors are encouraged to log on to CBRfree when they are next in the Tuggeranong town centre, or in any one of the six other CBRfree locations around Canberra, to check out the network for themselves.
