The CBR Region will work together to capitalise on international flights by improving transport links and collaborating on freight, tourism and export opportunities under a deal signed with regional mayors today.

Mayors from across the CBR Region, together with the ACT Government, met in Canberra today to agree on an agreement to make the most of the start of direct international flights operating from Canberra Airport.

One of the core reasons companies like Singapore Airlines, as well as multinational retail companies such as IKEA and Costco, have chosen our city is access to a region of more than 800,000 people.

It’s crucial now that the ACT Government continues to engage with the local councils to ensure everyone shares in the benefits that will result from direct flights, which start in just 33 days.

The new agreement with the Canberra Region Joint Organisation (CBRJO) will see the greater collaboration in enhancing regional freight and export opportunities. Also included in the agreement was a commitment to greater use of the CBR Region brand and a focus on cross-border cost-saving initiatives through procurement.

The MOU reflects a maturing relationship with the CBRJO, which welcomed new member Bega Valley Shire Council, announced last week.

Part of the discussion today also focused on improving freight opportunities through improvements to key road networks. The Mayors and I agreed to jointly advocate for improved road access in the region, including duplication of the Barton Highway.

Clr Rowena Abbey, Chair of the CBRJO said this MoU demonstrates a strategic partnership of cross-border collaboration between the ACT Government and the local government areas that surround the nation’s capital.

“This agreement further strengthens the close ties between the ACT and the regional and rural communities of south east NSW.  It will unlock future development, enhance cross-border collaboration and unite with a shared purpose, to build on the Canberra Region’s ability to attract investment, become the destination of choice for tourists and grow the regional economy,” Mrs Abbey said.

The CBRJO membership includes Bega Valley Shire Council, Eurobodalla Shire Council, Goulburn-Mulwaree Council, Hilltops Council, Queanbeyan-Palerang Regional Council, Snowy Monaro Regional Council, Upper Lachlan Shire Council, Yass Valley Council and the ACT Government.
