Minister Barr: Booming ACT economy ‘above trend and accelerating’

The latest ANZ Stateometer report has shown that the ACT’s economy is growing at an ‘above trend’ rate, with Victoria the only other jurisdiction in the same category as the ACT.
This is another sign of the strength of the ACT’s economy – which despite years of significant cuts from the Federal Liberal Government is performing well. As detailed in the ANZ report, the key contributor to the improvement in the ACT’s economy is the buoyancy in the labour market.
Canberra has the lowest unemployment rate in Australia – and jobs are being created through confidence in our economy. The ACT Government invested in our economy over recent years to weather the storm. The plan has worked, and now the ACT is set to benefit from a period of growth.
Major infrastructure projects like stage one of the city wide light rail project and the new University of Canberra public hospital not only create jobs, they promote economic activity and international investment.
My team is focused on providing better services to all Canberrans, and keeping them employed. This strategy has worked, and this will continue under a government I lead in the future as Canberra enters a period of growth for our city.
