Victoria’s best fish and chips
- Written by Victorian Government
Fish and chips enjoyed in a picturesque seaside setting is one of life’s most simple – yet satisfying – pleasures. With more than 2500 kilometres of coastline, it should be no surprise that there are some top notch fish and chips to be found along Victoria’s coast. Here are some of the most popular spots to enjoy fresh local seafood, pretty much straight off the boat – and often with spectacular views:
GEELONG AND THE BELLARINE PENINSULAThe Geelong Boat House is located on an atmospheric old barge at the western end of the Geelong Waterfront. Open daily from 9am to late, The Boat House turns out super-fresh, traditional-style battered and grilled fish and chips, salads, home-made cakes and great coffee. Visitors can dine on the roof or gangplank, and takeaway is available, even to passing sailors who can have their meal lowered down in a basket! 10 Western Beach Foreshore Road, Geelong, +61 3 5222 3642.
Front and centre on the Geelong Waterfront, King George Fish and Grill is a family-run business offering an extensive menu of local seafood – including fish and chips – in a relaxed restaurant environment with friendly hospitality. 100 Western Beach Road, Geelong, +61 3 5221 6267.
GREAT OCEAN ROADA popular spot with the locals, the Apollo Bay Seafood cafe offers a selection of seafood including generous servings of locally caught fish and chips, and memorable views. Diners can eat in or make it a meal to go and tuck in among the greenery at one of the many picnic tables at the park across the street. 119 Great Ocean Road, Apollo Bay, +61 3 5237 6008.
Further along the coast, The Wharf Commons is a new addition to Port Fairy’s food offering. With a selection of fish and chips as well as burgers, it is a great spot to sample the ‘catch of the day’ in this picturesque, historic seaside village. 29 Gipps Street, Port Fairy.
GIPPSLANDThe tranquil seaside village of Port Albert is well known for its fresh seafood. Former professional fisherman Michael Hobson is behind the must-visit seafood restaurant Wildfish Port Albert which showcases local seafood, produce and wine in an elegant setting. It’s easy to spend all afternoon sitting on the deck overlooking the water or snuggled up inside near the warm fire (in winter) in this beautifully decorated restaurant right on the waterfront. 40 Wharf St, Port Albert, +61 3 5183 2007.
Located on Australia’s largest network of inland waterways and somewhat of a mecca for boaties, fishermen and family holidays, it is no surprise that Lakes Entrance offers plenty of choice when it comes to fresh seafood. For fish and chips, visitors can take their pick from the catch of the day at Awesome Fish n Chips or Fishermens Own Omega 3!. The latter is owned by the Lakes Entrance Fishing Co-op Limited and doubles as a fish monger so patrons can choose from freshly caught fish cooked in or to take away. The local tip: the prawns are a must.
