Free public Wi-Fi for Bendigo and Ballarat
- Written by Victorian Government
Regional Victoria hubs, Ballarat and Bendigo, are set to become the first cities to enjoy free public Wi-Fi across a number of outdoor public spaces as part of the Wi-Fi Project, a new five-year pilot program.
The $11 million pilot will be the largest free public Wi-Fi service of its kind in Australia, with Melbourne city locations expected to roll out throughout 2016.
The free service will be managed and maintained by telecommunications company TPG, allowing for up to 250 MB per device, per day and does not require personal logins or feature pop-up advertising.
The underlying Wi-Fi infrastructure deployed will also play a key role in piloting innovative smart city projects that will leverage emerging technologies to enhance the quality, performance and interactivity of urban services.
Once complete the project will provide a combined coverage zone of over 600,000 square metres across the three cities, while also being available for state and federal disaster response in the event of an emergency.
The 5-year pilot will help to determine the feasibility of free public Wi-Fi services for the state as part of a broader strategy to strengthen Victoria’s position as a digital leader.
Access point locations and more information about the service can be found here and on social media #VicGovFree.
