Brew with a view

Iconic city views are best when washed down with a local brew – whether it’s a sunset, a skyscraper or a sporting ground – these Melbourne bars and restaurants are selfie-tastic.
Father’s Office occupies the corner on the third floor of Swanston Street’s QV centre, its balcony overlooks the splendour of the Victorian State Library, Australia’s oldest public library, established in 1854.
It is Melbourne’s oldest licensed venue and now with a swanky new second floor venue. Dutchess offers spacious leather booths and killer cocktails with a menu that combines international flavours with local produce. The views from the balcony overlook Federation Square and St Paul’s Cathedral.
Set on what was a once platform along Flinders Street station new comer, The Arbory is surely the longest bar in Australia. Train spotters will love watching the trains come and go one from one side, while stunning views of Southbank can be enjoyed from the other.
Fatto Bar and Cantina is set on 80 metres of river frontage, providing stellar views of the city skyline. Sitting opposite the iconic dome of Flinders Street Station and Federation Square, diners here can watch on with a wine in hand, as city life rushes by beyond.
Sports fans will love Transit Bar in Federation Square. Not only do the big screens downstairs enable prime viewing, but its stunning roof top offers views of the MCG in one direction, while the Victorian Arts Centre spire looms in the other.
The best spot to catch the sun disappearing into the bay at dusk is surely Captain Baxter, located on St Kilda’s foreshore. Arguably the best summer setting in the city, the comfy sofas on the outdoor deck are a great place to relax with a bottle of bubbles.
Lui Bar, part of Shannon Bennett’s decadent dining establishment Vue De Monde is a must for those who enjoy the high life. A sophisticated drinks menu, and equally spectacular 55th floor view, make an evening at Lui one memorable experience.
A non-descript door from the inside of a Swanston Street noodle house conceals rooftop bar Goldilocks. Opulent intimate booths are juxtaposed with communal gathering spaces with chesterfield lounges and library books and the rooftop provides an open air view of the city centre.
Selfies here are positively encouraged!
