The National Institute of Circus Acts (NICA) will be stepping back through the history of circus with their new production, Born in Sawdust (18 – 28 November). Performed by NICA’s 2015 graduates, the phrase ‘Born in Sawdust’ is traditionally used in Russia to describe someone who is born into the circus.
The performance is centred around stories from NICA’s trainers, a notion conceived by the show’s creator and director, Gavin Robins. The show will include digital displays that have been developed by Swinburne University students, and will explore the relationship between projected silhouettes and the live circus performance.
Born in Sawdust will gives audiences a rare opportunity to see Australia’s emerging circus stars perform a mix of old and new tricks. Acts will include aerial hoop, highwire, dance trapeze, clowning and object manipulation.
Born in Sawdust will be performed at the state-of-the-art NICA National Circus Centre in Prahran.
