Collecting Comme, NGV International
Rei Kawakubo of Comme des Garçons is one of the most visionary and influential fashion designers working today. Since the late 1970s, her intent has always been ‘to make clothes that didn’t exist before’ and she has consistently defied convention to redefine fashion. Collecting Comme examines the radical concepts and design methods that have informed Kawakubo’s practice since 1981, the year she first presented in Paris. Featuring more than fifty examples drawn from the NGV’s significant Comme des Garçons holdings, generously gifted to the Gallery by Takamasa Takahashi, and supported by additional loans from his archive, the exhibition highlights key collections and recurrent themes in Kawakubo’s work. 180 St Kilda Rd, Melbourne, Victoria, 3006.
Summer Night Market, Queen Victoria Market
Now a staple of the summer months, Melbourne’s original and favourite night market is set to return to the Queen Victoria Market this month. Explore delicious street food stalls and great shopping, enjoy the engaging live entertainment, relax at the Palm Springs Bar sipping refreshing fruit cocktails and test your skills on the pop-up volleyball court. The famed Scott Pickett has added yet another stunning restaurant to his stable with the launch of Pastoré. Delivering an all-day casual dining experience that combines great Italian flavours and the smoke and flames of Matilda, the restaurant is located inside the Sofitel’s Hotel Chadstone. Set to open this month - stay tuned to their website for details - Falco Bakery is headed by former Tivoli Road and Tartine baker, Christine Tran, and comes from the team behind popular diner Rockwell and Sons. Currently in the works for the menu are savoury morning pastries, sandwiches and 15 to 18 different pies. The space will be designed by Chris James Design Studio which also took care of the fit-out at Capitano. MPavilion is Australia’s leading architecture commission and a cultural laboratory for the community to engage and share. MPavilion spotlights Melbourne as the creative and design capital of Australia, fostering discussion and debate about the role design, architecture and culture have in creating cities that are liveable, creative and equitable. In 2019, MPavilion welcomes influential Australian architect Glenn Murcutt AO as the esteemed designer. Byrdi, ELLA @ Melbourne Central
The team from Singapore’s celebrated Operation Tigger bring Byrdi to Melbourne, with aspirations for the bar to rival its sibling venue in the World’s Top 50 Best Bars list in the years ahead. Byrdi offers a menu of small plates alongside an ever-changing amuse-bouche designed to keep you occupied while you wait to order or for your first drink. Cocktails are built with care and precision over time, with some components conceived months in advance. Ciao Pizza Napoli opens after an eight-week renovation as the Hardware Club, paying homage to the Hardware Lane institution while delivering a fresh spin on one of Melbourne’s oldest pizzerias. Overlooking Kirk’s Wine Bar, this 65-seat restaurant is inspired by Verona and features ash timber, a marble bar and tiles of white. Melbourne's newest cafe has a distinctly Aussie twist from the team behind popular eateries Left Field, Plain Sailing and Port of Call. Located in converted former stables on Dorcas St in South Melbourne, Nine Yards is a reflection of the Australian landscape through its colours and textures. The State Library of Victoria will open the doors to its transformed library on 5 December. The re-opening will mark the completion of an ambitious $88.1 million redevelopment that will increase public space by 40% and seating by 70%. Nearly five years in the making, the Vision 2020 redevelopment responds to the changing needs of the Library’s growing community, providing better access to the world’s best knowledge today and into the future.
