Toasty winter tipples
Everyone loves a summertime spritz but what about a toasty tipple this winter?

While fireplaces crackle and flicker to combat cooler temperatures, Melbourne’s bars and restaurants are doing their best to keep people warm on the inside with their patented winter warmers.

Nothing warms the stomachs (and hands) in winter like the cold-weather classic, mulled wine.

Ready to induce a curious case of the happy hiccups are places like ReWine Bar and Wineshop with the wine wizards serving mulled wine from barrels all winter long. The Lygon Street wine bar and bottle shop even sells a syrup to add to you own wine mix for those that prefer a nip at home.

The kings of cheese and booze at Milk the Cow are brewing their seasonally spiced Glühwein with complimentary tastings on arrival while the cocktail connoisseurs at Madame Brussels are serving piping hot mulled wine in an adorable teapot and tea cosy.

For palates preferring something a little different, Coldstream Brewery’s Steaming Hot Apple Cider is available every Wednesday night at the Winter Night Market. Alongside specialty shopping, live music and a line-up of more than 30 global food vendors, the Queen Victoria Markets are a cold-weather ritual for locals and visitors alike.

From cosy crevasses to toasty taverns, Melbourne’s cocktail bars aren’t to be outdone when it comes to offering cocktail cures for the dreaded winter blues.

The Woods of Windsor are catering to neighbourhood night owls with their carefully crafted signature delights.

The fiery Blazing Glögg from the Viking inspired Mjølner is served in a chalice with house spice ‘teabag’, while the mixologists at Beneath Driver Lane are challenging adventurous drinkers with their Blackbeard Blazer, made with a house-made blackstrap rum, blue mountain tea syrup and cocoa bitters.

Gin Palace on Russell Place is serving up chilli and gingersnap cookies with their Hot and Foxy. Union Electric Bar have put a spicy-spin on a Sam Ross original with their whiskey based Hot Ross, garnished with candied ginger and Above Board in Collingwood are tackling Irish Coffee with their cold drip infused, nutmeg dusted aperitif, Bringing Sexy Bax.

Enjoy city views from the sheltered Bomba Rooftop and cosy-up with two new warming winter cocktails during August. The Steamy & Blushing is a floral punch style cocktail with hibiscus tea and served with a piece of Turkish delight while the Don't Mocha Me The Don’t Mocha Me is inspired by the Spanish drink the Carajillo which combines hot coffee with brandy.
