MTV Unplugged Melbourne back for 2019

Marking the fourth instalment in the Australian-produced Unplugged concert series, the five-piece band from Menangle NSW performed a 14-song set in front of a live audience of 150 in the Gershwin Room at the Espy.

With the Unplugged stage set under a canopy of crystal chandeliers, The Rubens were accompanied by a stunning string quartet (Louise May, Amy You, Paul Zabrowarny and Ceridwen Davis) and harpist (Emily Rosner) as they performed a stripped back set of hits including Hoops, Never Ever (feat. Sarah) and My Gun.

Soulful pop vocalist Lauren Azar joined them on stage to perform their hit song Never Ever, and a cover of Mark Ronson and Miley Cyrus’ recent duet, Nothing Breaks Like a Heart.

The Rubens said post performance, “It was great to bring our set to life on the MTV Unplugged Melbourne stage last night. Playing our songs at The Epsy was an incredible millstone for us as a band.”

The Rubens - comprised of brothers, Zaac (guitar), Sam (vocals) and Elliott (keyboards) Margin and Scott Baldwin (drums) and William Zeglis (bass guitar) – have been a mainstay on both the album and single charts with hits such as the triple j Hottest 100 #1 single Hoops, Halluejah, Lay It Down, and most recently, Never Ever (feat. Sarah), God Forgot and Million Man.

MTV Unplugged Melbourne presented by Vodka O is a series of special televised events showcasing the best local talent on a world stage. MTV Unplugged Melbourne is filmed in venues around Australia’s home of live music, Melbourne, hosted by Visit Victoria.

Peter Bingeman, CEO of Visit Victoria, added, “Melbourne has more live music venues per capita than anywhere else in the world and we're very proud of that. MTV Unplugged Melbourne helps us share our stories with new audiences, not only with regard to our music credentials, but also the neighbourhoods, restaurants, cafés, events, arts and other cultural experiences in a city full of surprises.”

MTV Unplugged Melbourne: The Rubens will premiere Thursday March 14 at 9:00pm AEDT only on MTV on Foxtel, Foxtel Now and Fetch. A full audio/visual release of MTV Unplugged Melbourne: The Rubens will be available for download and streaming at a later date.
