Decidedly deciduous - colourful bush-walks
Autumn’s arrival is the perfect time to enjoy gorgeous orange, yellow and red colours in parks around Melbourne and regional Victoria. Crisp cool temperatures are perfect for a bushwalk, taking photos and seeing the stunning displays of turning leaves.

The gardens of the Dandenong RangesSeven beautiful gardens can be found in the Dandenong Ranges,  just 35 kilometres east of Melbourne.  Each garden features stunning fiery colours set amongst the picturesque hills and views of the Dandenong Ranges. Less than an hour’s drive from the city and with free admittance, the gardens are open every day. The most spectacular to visit in autumn are Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden, Alfred Nicholas Gardens, George Tindale Memorial Garden and RJ Hamer Arboretum.

Seawinds Gardens at Arthurs SeatVisitors can enjoy a network of walking tracks through formal gardens and native bush. Spectacular views over Port Phillip Bay and sculptures in the garden make this a very popular spot. The 34-hectare Seawinds Gardens lie within Arthurs Seat State Park on the Mornington Peninsula, one hour and 15 minutes from Melbourne.

Buchan Caves Reserve in far east GippslandBuchan Caves Reserve is around three hours drive from the city. While it's the caves full of stalactites that are the star attraction here, the reserve is nestled in a valley full of towering, colourful European trees.  With several beautiful picnic areas to enjoy, visitors should pitch a tent, spread the picnic rug and enjoy the well-serviced campground facilities or explore the underworld wonderland of one or more of the caves. Buchan Caves Reserve is a rite of passage for kids.

Coolart Historic Area at SomersJust over an hour from Melbourne, Coolart’s historic mansion is set in a delightful garden with wetlands, woodlands and pasture nearby. Paths lead to the beach, lagoon and wetlands and the Homestead lawns are the perfect location for a leisurely picnic.  Autumn is most definitely the prettiest time to visit with the vibrant hues of the leaves transforming to all the colours of the nature.

Vaughan Springs in Castlemaine Diggings National Heritage ParkJust 15 minutes from Castlemaine, this hidden gem is a beautiful place to enjoy nature and history combined. Kids can ride on the giant slide, skim rocks along the river or walk part of the Goldfields Track.

Go to www.parks.vic.gov.au and search by a park name for more colourful autumn walks.
