Comedy beyond the Comedy Festival

A laugh a minute is not confined to the Festival, though, with visitors relishing the chance to experience a variety of comedy gigs across the year at everything from bespoke comedy clubs to open-mic nights at venues in neighbourhoods only a tram ride away.

Spleen Bar

Spleen Bar hosts a comedy night every Monday, with the experience one of the hottest tickets in town.

Drop-in guests in recent times include the likes of Jimeoin, Arj Barker, Adam Hills, Wil Anderson, Dave Hughes, Celia Pacquola, Charlie Pickering, Fiona O'Loughlin, Tom Gleeson and many more.

Take a seat in the packed room and wait to see who graces the stage. Household names alongside the best up and coming talent are all but guaranteed.

41 Bourke St, Melbourne, (03) 9650 2400

Pilgrim Bar

The first Thursday of the month provides a new line-up of comical genius at Pilgrim Bar.

Hosted by emcee Peter Jones, the maestro will take  visitorsthrough a night of nothing but laughs as multiple funny men and women take to the stage.

A happy hour in the two hours before the show starts (4:30pm-6:30pm) make this night out an obvious choice.

Federation Wharf, 15-19 Federation Drive, Melbourne, (03) 9654 9575

The Butterfly Club

The Big Hoo-Ha on Friday nights at the Butterfly Club is one of the longest running improv nights in Melbourne.

An iconic venue, famed for its quirky corners and even quirkier live performance schedule, a night at the Butterfly Club sees the drinks flowing almost as freely as the laughter.

5 Carson Place, Melbourne, (03) 9663 8107

The Catfish

The likes of Nazeem Hussain, Claire Hooper, Joel Creasey and Tommy Little have thrilled the masses at Catfish in Fitzroy, when comedy comes to the front bar on Tuesday nights.

A live music venue on every other night of the week, Catfish has a selection of craft beer to provide the perfect accompaniment to continued chuckling, with tickets a mere $12.

30-32 Gertrude St, Fitzroy, (03) 9417 6420

The Comics Lounge

Arguably Melbourne’s most iconic comedy venue, The Comics Lounge welcomes live comedy six nights a week.

From comedians testing their new material ahead of international and national tours, to open-mic nights, up and coming performances and the likes of Lawrence Mooney, Liz Miele and Christian Hull on their event listing, there’s something for everyone.

26 Errol St, North Melbourne, (03) 9348 9488
