Clip in for Victoria's wild ride
- Written by Victorian Government
From clipping in for the first time to downhill enthusiasts, Victoria's array of tracks cater for riders of all skill level keen to explore the state’s bush slopes throughout the High Country, Great Ocean Road, Grampians, Goldfields, and the Yarra Valley and Dandenong Ranges.
With over 300km of world class dedicated alpine, bike park and river valley trails across seven mountain bike parks, Ride High Country can undeniably lay claim to the title of Victoria’s cycling capital.
The town is mad about cycling with great support services, bike hire (mountain, hybrid and electric bikes) and a trail network that offers a unique mix of riding trails for all skill levels. While 70 percent of the trails in Bright are intermediate, the town also features Mystic’s Hero Trail for thrill seekers and the Pump Track or the Play Ground for first timers.
The mountain biking scene in Beechworth is thriving, with the small but seriously fun and funky mountain bike park, just on the outskirts of town. There is also Flametrees, a cross-country loop with gullies and cuttings weaving through forest.
Mt Buller is a world-class destination offering the ideal biking escape and home to Australia’s first International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA) endorsed Ride Centre. Just three hours from Melbourne, Mt Buller features extensive cross-country trail network, hit the downhill trails with chairlift access, tackle the pump track, skills parks and more. Expert riders will want to tackle the International trail, the mountain’s most advanced and extremely technical trail, including the iconic ‘Mark’s Madness’.
Falls Creek Mountain Bike Park
With more than 40 kilometres of singletrack winding through snowgums in brilliant alpine terrain, Falls Creek is a mountain biker heaven. All trails start and finish in the resort so each descent is matched with a technical uphill to take riders back to the top. There's trails for everyone with easy cruiser, fun flowing descent or all-mountain.
Yackandandah Mountain Bike Park
Yackandandah is the newest kid on the mountain biking block in North East Victoria. Locals have been built six tracks in the Stanley State Forest catering to beginner and intermediate riders. The Carcass Canyon trail takes full advantage of the 160-year-old gold mining remnants and leads riders through a maze of shoots and sunken mining races, not to mention the tricky corners and drops. Riders should keep an eye out for Big Bear, a local oversized stuff animal that surprises riders before the Kokoda climb.
The Mt Beauty Big Hill Mountain Bike Park has more than 40 kilometres of top quality cross-country and downhill trails suitable for beginner, intermediate and advanced riders. Situated 30kms west of the popular town of Bright, Mt Beauty is a 'must do' for mountain bikers with 46 trails catering for all skills. The Yellow Loop is a challenging 10km cross-country loop and takes in some of Mt Beauty’s most iconic trails - from tight and technical to fast and flowy, this loop has it all.
