Second to naan at these Indian hotspots

Babu Ji - Gluten Free NaanOpened in St Kilda in 2014, Babu Ji brought a fresh perspective on Indian cuisine to Melbourne. Offering familiar dishes, but with local produce and little twist. Diners can start with a delicious Pani Puri, then choose a main dish 'From the Street'. To soak up all the flavours, Babu Ji offers a range of Naan from plain, sesame and onion seed, as well as  Kashmiri Naan, crispy Naan bread stuffed with almond, cashew, dried fruits and coconut, and Gluten Free Naan, Quinoa, chickpea and lentil flour with psyllium husk. Babu Ji’s speciality. The George Building, 4–6 Grey Street, St Kilda, (03) 9534 2447

Piquancy - Kashmiri NaanSister restaurant over in the eastern precinct of Hawthorn offers a similar menu including delicious 'From the Pot' vegetarian dishes such as Baingan Bhartha, smoky, fire grilled eggplant, green peas, ginger & garlic, Anzeer Ke Kofte, gig, pomegranate & cashew dumpling curry and Channa Saag, kabuli chickpeas mixed with garlic based spinach mush, topped with yogurt cheese. Same naan selections as Babu Ji above.  123 Auburn Rd, Hawthorn VIC 3122, (03) 9813 5160

Horn Please - Blue Vein Cheese NaanThe popular North Fitzroy restaurant welcomes founder Jessi Singh back into the fold and the menu represents his love of fusion and innovation, not afraid to take a risk with a classic. One of those risks, is the blue vein cheese naan with coriander, garam masala, cumin. Its bold flavour complements the aromatic and spicey curries and street food dishes on the menu. The tasting menu is definitely the way to go with this buzzy and vibrant neighbourhood joint. 167 St Georges Rd, Fitzroy North VIC 3068, (03) 9497 8101

Elichi - Truffled NaanElichi (pronounced Eh-lychee) is the third restaurant from restaurateur Mani Wariach, who's sibling restaurants are St Kilda’s Babu Ji and Hawthorn’s Piquancy, as above. At Elichi, there is the same focus on local produce, but head chef Punit Fernandes, who is from Mumbai, has thing about Australian flavours and how to match them with classic Indian dishes. One dish diners won't get at the other restaurants is his signature, Truffled Naan. Set right on the beach in Black Rock this is sure to be a hit with locals and visitors. 6/8 Bluff Road, Black Rock, VIC, 3193.

Delhi Streets - Paneer Pizza NaanPerfect for a quick pre or post sightseeing lunch this little restaurant is small in capacity and big on flavour. Diners can pick off the classics menu or try the 'feed me' $35 option, or the perfectly propotioned Thali's - two curries, rice, naan and pickles. There is also wraps and pizzas section where foodies can opt for the Paneer Pizza Naan, open face wrap, capsicum, coriander, cheese, tomatoes, Spanish onions and crumbled Indian cheese with special Masala sauce.  22 Katherine Pl, Melbourne VIC 3000, (03) 9629 2620
