With Shannon Bennett of Vue de monde opening Benny Burger this week, the burger trend shows no signs of waning in bun hungry Melbourne.

Benny Burger – Shannon’s burgers use Blackmore’s Wagyu beef and are ethical and organic with ingredients all sourced locally. There’s also a vegetarian beetroot and chickpea burger with coleslaw, a potato cake burger, the cheekily named ‘Cluck Off’ chicken burger and The ‘Chang’ which references Momofuku founder David Chang’s article of two years ago panning Australian burgers. The website audio includes a fun and educational ‘skit’ audio from the Bennett family. 95 Swan St, Richmond VIC 3121, +61 (03) 9691 3800

Burger Project – Neil Perry’s burger chain includes the Melbourne outpost in the new St Collins Lane development. The burger promise – fast food with slow food values. The beef – 100% cape grim grass fed. The difference – burger bowls served up in a crisp piece of lettuce for those who don’t eat bread. Also delicious shakes, house sodas, and beer and wine available. The Aviary, 260 Collins St, Melbourne VIC 3000.

Andrews Burgers – the team that’s been flipping burgers for 70 years in Albert Park and has cult status in Melbourne has finally added a city centre outlet around the corner from the Queen Victoria Market. The Andrew’s Burger staple includes egg, bacon, cheese, grilled tomato, cooked onions, lettuce and sauce. There is also the Five-O based on the based on the traditional ‘burger with the lot’ that includes pineapple and beetroot. 155 Franklin Street Melbourne 3000, +61 (03) 9690 2126

8bit – brioche buns with all the fillings and a quirky theme that references video gaming (the original Footscray outpost has free video games to play). 8bit burgers are big enough to fill the stomach but not so big that the afternoon’s a write off. They also do a five different fries options and onion rings plus shakes, hotdogs, tater tots and soft-serve. 231 Swanston St, Melbourne, VIC, 3000 +61 (03) 9687 8838

Pickle – Melbourne’s burger obsession has also gone local and this new burger place is serving the East Brunswick residents up quality burgers and great prices, like the Basic B beef burger with cheese, pickles, lettuce, tomato and American mustard for $9. There are also perfectly sized options for kids (with little to no green inclusions). Possibly the best thing about this intimate local however is the spiked shakes including a Baileys and Belgian chocolate version, and a Kahlua, espresso and vanilla bean shake. 1 Nicholson Street, Brunswick East, VIC, 3057, +61 (03)

Easey’s – in Collingwood is jam-packed with modern Melbourne icons. From a 1972 Hitachi train carriage, seated on original orange tartan train seats, diners can fill up on a Melbourne Madness Burger (complete with a potato cake AND dim sim), sip on a local beer (Melbourne Bitter or Mountain Goat) and enjoy the original street art on the walls. 3/48 Easey Street, Collingwood, +61 (03) 9079 5942
