Dialogue in the Dark opens in Melbourne
- Written by Victorian Government
This month, Dialogue in the Dark, an immersive experience that has made its way around the world, will open in Melbourne. The experience has visitors in total darkness and led by blind guides, relying solely on their other senses to communicate and make their way through the experience. Armed only with a white cane while a blind guide provides skilled leadership through life’s everyday challenges and activities, visitors will have a 60-minute experience in which they will discover how to orientate and move themselves in the dark, identify the world around them through the other senses and collaborate without sight. Guides range in ages from 21-55 years and are from all walks of life with one thing in common; the desire for independence, inclusion and gainful employment opportunities. “I always had difficulty accepting the term ‘disabled’, says guide and Positive Vision Educator Maribel Steel. ‘Teaching the sighted what they are capable of without sight will go a long way in changing perceptions of how we live.’
