Elisabeth Dykstra and Ella Kruger, both from Campbell High School were announced today as the two winners of the ACT Chief Minister’s Anzac Spirit Prize 2016.

The prize was open to all ACT school students who were in years 9 and 10 in 2015 as part of the ACT Government’s commemorative activities during the Centenary of World War 1.

Responding to a quote from Charles Bean, Australia’s Official War correspondent of the time, the competition offered students an opportunity to research stories about the sacrifices made by Australians during the battles of the Western Front; stories that have become an important record of our nation’s history, sacrifice and the legacy of war.

The two winning students submitted creative responses to the task set for the 2016 competition and showed a strong understanding of the sacrifice made by Australians during these battles.

Elisabeth and Ella will travel to France and Belgium in July 2016 to take part in a study tour as part of the prize. They will have the opportunity to visit key battlefields and attend the official 100th anniversary commemorative services for the Battle of Fromelles and Battle of Pozières. This will be a wonderful experience as the students join thousands to mark the Centenary of significant battles on the Western Front.

I understand the quality of entries this year was truly impressive and I would also like to congratulate two students who were highly commended for their creative entries- Elle Butterworth from Canberra High School and Eleanor Foster, at Telopea High School last year but now at Narrabundah College.
