I am pleased to induct six new recipients onto the ACT Honour Walk.

Canberra, as we know it today, is in large part due to the contributions of the people whose names appear on the Honour Walk. Those honoured come from a diverse field of endeavours, including the law, governance, the environment, architecture and planning, business, culture and sport.

Recipients who have been recognised in 2016 are St John’s Anglican Church Canberra, the Jennings Germans, the Taverner family, The Honourable Jeffrey Miles AO, Geoff Pryor and William (Bill) Hoffmann OAM.

St John’s Anglican Church Canberra was a focal point for the communities of the Limestone Plains and remains to this day a place of religious and social significance for many Canberrans.

The Jennings Germans, a group of 150 single German carpenters and joiners paid their own way to Canberra after World War II to construct 1850 homes for AV Jennings. Many of them stayed on in Canberra, contributing to our multicultural society.

The Taverner family, Canberrans since 1928, who managed Manuka Pool from 1955 until 2012 have strived to conserve the heritage aspects of the buildings and surrounding grounds.

The Honourable Jeffrey Miles AO, Chief Justice of the ACT Supreme Court from 1985-2002 played a leading role in ensuring that the constitutional arrangements for the Territory included the securing of judicial independence.

Geoff Pryor spent 30 years drawing cartoons for the Canberra Times from 1978-2008, with his daily cartoon something Canberrans looked forward to each day as they opened the paper.

The late Bill Hoffmann OAM re-established the Canberra City Band in 1947 and was Bandmaster for three decades. He also introduced instrumental music in Canberra’s schools and was senior music critic for the Canberra Times.

The ACT Honour Walk was commissioned in 2005 and provides enduring recognition of individuals or groups that have made sustained contributions to the ACT.

Any person or group who has played a leading role in shaping the city of Canberra is eligible for recognition on the ACT Honour Walk. Nominations are open year round at cmd.act.gov.au/communication/act-honour-walk
