The Mayor of the City of Wellington, Ms Celia Wade-Brown is in Canberra today to discuss new opportunities for economic and cultural exchange when direct international flights connect our cities from September.

Canberra and Wellington have much in common. We are two of the most liveable cities in the OECD, both cities leverage the business opportunities that extend from being the seat of federal Government and both cities are knowledge-based economies that attract smart and talented people.

In addition, both our Governments have strong ambition to drive change and opportunity and to grow in a way that reflects our contemporary community. We are both focused on improving our productivity, livability and economic competitiveness.

Mayor Wade-Brown said that the capital cities of Australia and New Zealand must have closer and stronger cultural, economic and political ties.

“My ultimate aim is a formal city relationship with Canberra, one that delivers real benefits for Wellington”, said Mayor Wade-Brown.

“The recent deal with Singapore Airlines, flying from Singapore to Wellington with a brief stop-over in Canberra, is an example of what can be achieved together. The route opens up further opportunities between the Anzac capitals.”

The Mayor’s visit comes as the relationship between our two cities is at an all time high. Last week, the ACT Government announced that New Zealand will be playing a One Day International match against Australia at Manuka Oval during the 2016-17 season Chappell-Hadlee series.

This match comes in time to take advantage of direct flights, with New Zealand cricket fans able to fly directly to Canberra to watch the match and to enjoy our gorgeous city in the summer. This week’s delegation is an opportunity to promote the high quality services and goods that the Canberra region has to offer Wellington and New Zealand more broadly and the opportunities that Wellington companies can explore in Canberra.
