Congratulations to the University of Canberra on its continued rise in world rankings. It is excellent news that the University that bears our city’s name has been listed as one of the best young universities in the world in the prestigious 2016 Times Higher Education (THE) 150 Under 50 ranking.
Higher education and research are strengths of Canberra as one of the world’s top ranked students cities. The government is supporting universities to grow and diversify and strengthen our economy. We have overcome the anti-university, anti-jobs position of the Canberra Liberals to make a series of legislative changes to enable the University of Canberra, one of our major employers, to be more competitive and deliver its education and research on a more secure footing.
It is particularly pleasing that this news has emerged on the day the University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Stephen Parker attended his final graduation ceremony.
The University of Canberra has been a remarkable success story under his leadership. It has grown significantly in student numbers and in the quality and quantity of its research.
Stephen’s legacy is a university that is confident in its direction; a vibrant and inclusive campus; and recognised world-ranked institution that has drawn a leading academic administrator to carry on his vision.
The new teaching hospital currently being built at the University will not only improve healthcare in the capital, it will also boost the university by attracting more students and researchers, creating new jobs in the process.
