Minister Barr: Canberra Brickworks land for sale

The renewal of the historic Canberra Brickworks is progressing with blocks go to the market in a two-stage sales process to select a preferred developer.
This significant urban renewal project will restore and activate the Brickworks industrial site in Yarralumla. It is part of the Government’s commitment to urban renewal that will make Canberra a more compact, liveable and sustainable city.
The Canberra Brickworks Precinct includes two new heritage parks and an opportunity for diverse commercial uses and a residential development of up to 380 dwellings, helping to revitalise the suburb.
The Government has worked closely with the community over many years on plans for this area. This 16-hectare project responds to community feedback in earlier consultations and will result in quality development around an iconic site.
To prepare for the sale, the Land Development Agency convened a community panel of stakeholder groups to define the objectives for the development. It is the first time the ACT Government has tried this form of community engagement.
The objectives form part of the Request for Proposal and will make clear to prospective developers what the community values about the site and its expectations for successful development. These include conservation and reuse of heritage buildings, diverse and sustainable housing options, integrating open spaces and recreation facilities into existing networks and minimising adverse impacts on traffic, parking and privacy.
The Government expects keen interest from developers in this prime opportunity to create a distinctive precinct in one of Canberra’s most exclusive areas. It expects to announce shortlisted developers by September, and a preferred developer by early 2017.
