Today was a day to celebrate what can be achieved when business and community sectors work together with a joint vision to promote social inclusion.
I had the pleasure of officially opening a new home in Canberra’s north which was built for people with disability. The home was developed by CHC Affordable Housing and will be maintained by Capital Community Housing.
Residents will be able to choose their own provider for any personal support they may require by using their National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) support.
Providing affordable housing that meets the needs of people with disability is one of the major housing issues our country faces.
Today’s event showed what we can achieve when the community pulls together.
We want people with and without disability, community organisations, industry and government to work together as Canberrans live up to the status of being the world’s most livable city.
The ACT Government is committed to providing better housing for people with disability. We have worked with families to fund the Benambra Intentional Community, a 25-residence community centred on the lives of people with disability.
We are also supporting Project Independence, a model of supporting people with disability to work towards home ownership.
Today’s event progresses INVOLVE – Canberra Disability Commitment, namely improving choice of housing for people with disability. We know that achieving good housing is essential for good health, education and employment outcomes and acts as a foundation for people to be part of their community.
