JOINT MEDIA RELEASE
I’m pleased to join with Minister for Higher Education, Training and Research Meegan Fitzharris today to congratulate Vice-President of the University of Toronto Professor H Deep Saini on his appointment as the next Vice-Chancellor of the University of Canberra.
I look forward to working with Professor Saini as we continue to diversify Canberra’s economy by building on our strengths in higher education and research.
Professor Saini has outstanding qualifications as an innovative leader who has played a leading role at Canada’s top-ranked, largest and most research-intensive university.
One in nine Canberrans is either employed or attends one of our tertiary education institutions, and the ACT Government is committed to growing our institutions so they are attractive and fulfilling places to work and study.
Professor Saini’s appointment is a testament to the University of Canberra’s growing reputation as a leading institution in Australia for students and academics – and I am pleased the ACT Government has been able to support this growth.
Minister Fitzharris congratulated Professor Saini and said his experience would be a huge asset to the University of Canberra and the ACT.
Minister Fitzharris said:
“I look forward to working with Professor Saini on the many exciting developments happening at UC over the next few years, including the development of the University of Canberra Public Hospital.
“I would also like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the outstanding work Professor Stephen Parker AO has done at the University of Canberra during his time as Vice-Chancellor. He has achieved so much for UC and Canberra more generally.
“Under Professor Parker, the University of Canberra placed in the top 100 young universities in the QS World University Rankings, student numbers have grown and research performance has risen sharply.
“Canberra has a strong higher education sector where people can study and then work in their chosen field and I am delighted Professor Saini will be making the move to Canberra to continue to build UC’s reputation as a place of academic excellence,” Minister Fitzharris said.
