Joint Media Release: Chief Minister Andrew Barr and Yvette Berry MLA
This morning, I was joined by Minister for Multicultural and Youth Affairs Yvette Berry to visit the Tuggeranong Introductory English Centre located at Wanniassa Hills Primary School as part of the Tuggeranong Pop-Up Cabinet.
The Tuggeranong Introductory English Centre is a $1.8 million ACT Government funded extension and refurbishment of the original school which was completed in 2015.
The upgrade fulfilled an ACT Government election commitment and is now an important resource for children to improve their English language ability.
The modern, first class resource can accommodate up to 45 children and provides students from a non-English speaking background with intensive English language courses to prepare for study in Canberra’s mainstream schools.
Minister Berry said that the centre is a wonderful initiative for the students involved, giving them a continued sense of belonging thanks to passionate teachers and supportive school communities.
“It is pleasing to see these students get the best start possible to their ACT schooling and I applaud the work by the Tuggeranong Introductory English Centre,” Minister Berry said.
The Tuggeranong Introductory English Centre is one of six centres established across Canberra to provide intensive English instruction, a safe and caring learning environment, and preparation for study in mainstream schools
