I congratulate Canberra Airport which tonight won gold in the category of Specialised Tourism Services at the Qantas Australian Tourism Awards 2015 in Melbourne.
Just two weeks ago, I joined Stephen Byron and Terry Snow to announce international flights between Canberra, Singapore and Wellington. This was a game changing moment for our city that I worked on closely with the management team at the airport over the past few years.
The confidence that Singapore Airlines have displayed in bringing flights to Canberra Airport is testimony to the quality of the facility and the capabilities of the management team.
It’s the second year running that the airport has beaten entrants from all states and territories to win this award.
I must also congratulate the Canberra Region’s other award winners:
- Questacon – The National Science and Technology Centre, Silver in the Tourist Attractions category.
- Floriade 2014, Silver in the Major Festivals and Events category.
- 2015 National Folk Festival, Bronze in the Festivals and Events category.
Winners of last December’s Canberra Region Tourism Awards represented the Canberra region at the national awards. The annual awards recognise excellence in tourism in an industry that contributes 1.6 billion to the ACT economy, employing 14,700 Canberrans.
International flights from Canberra Airport to Wellington and Singapore will begin operation later this year.
