Joint media release: Chief Minister Andrew Barr and Meegan Fitzharris MLA
Gungahlin residents are getting their first look at the new Hibberson Street station as part of the ACT Government’s Pop-up Cabinet in Gungahlin today.
Earlier this week, I joined the Minister for Capital Metro Simon Corbell to announce the winning consortium, Canberra Metro to construct and operate stage one of Canberra’s light rail from Gungahlin to the City. Today Capital Metro are displaying an artist’s impression of the station in the Gungahlin town centre.
Previous Pop-up Cabinets have brought ministers to the community in Woden and Belconnen. The next one is in Tuggeranong on 2 and 3 March.
Minister for Transport and Municipal Services and local Gungahlin resident Meegan Fitzharris said that today’s pop-up Cabinet is a great opportunity for the community to see images of the station design by Canberra Metro, and how it will be integrated into the Gungahlin town centre.
“Canberra Metro’s design encompasses an urban plan that recognises the importance of Canberra’s identity and surrounding environment, including the new Hibberson Street station,” Minister Fitzharris said.
“The image of Hibberson Street station which the community can see today provides a clear visual of the look and feel of what the Gungahlin terminus will look like once light rail is complete and operational in early 2019.
“These images also give us an insight into Canberra’s future and how living close to great public spaces, with an integrated public transport system, will encourage urban renewal along the corridor and connect our community.
“As the fastest growing suburb in Canberra, Gungahlin terminus at Hibberson Street station will not only be an accessible and high quality public space, but change the way Gungahlin residents use public transport in the future.”
