Congratulations to ACT Australian of the Year David Morrison on being named 2016 Australian of the Year.
The equality advocate, former Chief of Army and Griffith resident is a fine Australian and Canberran of whom we can all be proud.
When the former Lieutenant General in his now-famous address told soldiers to get outof the army if they couldn accept women as equals, he started cultural shift in the military, but also set off a chain events that is changing our nation for the better. When he said the standard you walk past is the standard you accept” he reminded all Australians that we have a responsibility to stand up for equality.
He retired in 2015 after 36 years in the Australian Army, and four years as its Chief, but he continues his commitment as a champion of human rights in his role as the Chair of the Diversity Council Australia
I wish him well with the important work he will do as Australian of the Year.
