Joint Media Release: Chief Minister Andrew Barr and Shane Rattenbury MLA

The ACT Government has released the updated Stromlo Forest Park master plan which aims to continually improve the precinct and provide further options for community use of the facilities.  Stromlo Forest Park is already a world-class recreational facility with thousands of Canberrans using the park regularly. The Government is seeking feedback on future additions to the park which may include district playing fields, an enclosed oval, tourist accommodation and a pool.  The master plan seeks to deliver a diverse sporting precinct, which will expand the range of sporting, community and tourist opportunities in Canberra and provide options for private investment in the facility. Stromlo Forest Park is a successful and popular recreational precinct, experiencing an average 15% annual growth in visitor numbers. With rapid residential development in the neighbouring Molonglo district projected to house 55,000 people in the next 30 years, usage of Stromlo Forest Park will continue to increase. This master plan seeks to ensure the facility prospers with more visitors. Minister for Sport and Recreation Shane Rattenbury said the updated master plan will allow Stromlo Forest Park to continue to grow into a major community asset that will meet the needs of our community into the future. “We have some great sporting facilities across the city and Canberra is becoming a real place on the map for a range of different sports like mountain biking, horse riding, orienteering,” said Mr Rattenbury.

“As our population grows it is important that we continue to develop our sporting infrastructure in parallel to ensure that all Canberrans have access to facilities that will encourage them to lead healthy, active lives.   “Stromlo Forest Park is already an outstanding sport and recreation precinct, and this master plan seeks to take it to the next level.  Once complete, the Park will be able to host a mix of organised sport, as well as opportunities for other non-structured ways to get outdoors and exercise, whether that be through mountain biking, running or taking advantage of the walking trails.” The 2010 master plan and the 2015 update can be viewed at haveyoursay.planning.act.gov.au. The community is encouraged to provide their feedback on the Stromlo Forest Park master plan update by visiting the website before the consultation closes on Friday 5 February 2016.
