Nominations are now open for the 2016 CBR Citizen of the Year and CBR Gold awards, celebrating the Canberra community’s most outstanding contributors and those who have been part of our community for 50 years of more.
The awards recognise the efforts of individuals in the community and acknowledge Canberra's long term residents and organisations. As Chief Minister it is a privilege to say thank you to the people who have helped shape the city we all know and love today.
2016 CBR Citizen of the Year
In 2016 the Canberra Citizen of the Year award is celebrating its 40th year since being introduced by The Canberra Times in 1977.
Over the last 40 years, the Canberra Citizen of the Year award has celebrated a wide cross-section of the talent, commitment and contribution made by so many in our community, including scientists, artists, scout leaders, dancers, journalists, medical practitioners, business people, community workers, police, nurses, volunteers, indigenous leaders, religious leaders and community organisations.
We are very fortunate to have such talented and giving members of our community and I encourage Canberrans to celebrate these outstanding contributors by taking a few moments to nominate them online by visiting www.act.gov.au/cbrcitizen.
The 2015 award was presented to Sue Salthouse in recognition of her personal efforts and significant contribution working to improve the lives and opportunities for people with disability, and in particular women with disability.
Sue has had an enormous year, particularly working across at a national level in the area of domestic violence prevention and I am so proud she is an ambassador for this city.
Nominations for the Canberra Citizen of the Year award close on 31 January 2016 and the winner will be announced as part of Canberra’s birthday celebrations in March 2016. Community members can also request a hard copy form via Canberra Connect by phoning 13 22 81.
CBR Gold
The CBR Gold awards recognise Canberra's long term residents and organisations, as those who have lived in and contributed to Canberra for more than five decades and show a great level of commitment to our city.
Canberrans are encouraged to nominate a family member, colleague, friend, or group that they know has been based in Canberra for the past 50 years.
Already group nominations for 2016 include Canberra Sand and Gravel, North Canberra-Gungahlin Athletics Club and the Uniting Church conference facility, the Greenhills Centre. It was opened by Mr Max Hill OAM in 1965 and despite the destruction of the 2003 bushfires it was rebuilt in 2006 and continues as a place for church and other gatherings.
To submit a nomination for the CBR Gold awards online visit www.act.gov.au/cbrgold. Community members can also request a hard copy form via Canberra Connect, phone 13 22 81.
Nominations for the CBR Gold awards close on 31 January 2016 with award recipients presented either pins or certificates also as part of the Canberra Day celebrations in March 2016.
