Today I am pleased to launch the sales campaign for the Kingston Arts Precinct, a key urban renewal project in Canberra’s oldest suburb. Developers have a unique opportunity to transform the four-hectare area around the Canberra Glassworks into a vibrant hub of arts and creativity.
The Government’s vision is to make the precinct a key cultural destination, bringing together the city’s heritage with a new development that will be Canberra’s creative hub. It will be a place where artists, cultural organisations and creative businesses make, teach, exhibit, perform and sell their work.
The area is already home to leading arts organisations the Canberra Glassworks and Megalo Print Studio + Gallery, and the Old Bus Depot markets. We expect others will relocate to the precinct and that new organisations will develop and flourish here.
The first stage in the LDA’s sales campaign is a Request for Proposal (RFP), which specifies the needs of arts organisations who will operate in the precinct including gallery, workshop, meeting and administration spaces, accommodation for visiting artists and car parking.
Developers need to demonstrate creative thinking and excellence in design and innovation to address layout, planning, construction and integration challenges. They are also required to develop an overarching precinct management plan.
The Land Development Agency expects keen interest from local, national and international developers in realising this vision - creating a project that sensitively brings together the old and the new, in the coolest little capital in the world.
The preferred developer is expected to be announced in mid-2016.
