Today I joined Reuse-RecycleIT, which is part of the Canberra based business Capital Easy Group, to highlight how the ACT Government is leading the way in finding sustainable solutions for used and excess ICT equipment.
Over the past five years, 100 per cent of our excess and superceded ICT equipment has been saved from landfill, and almost $3 million in value from these assets has returned to the government.
Reuse-RecycleIT estimates that more than 100,000 pieces of ACT Government ICT equipment, from computers and computer accessories to printers and projectors, have been recycled or reused since 2009. With the ICT equipment coming from all areas of ACT Government, including our schools, hospitals, courts system and more conventional office spaces.
The ACT Government has a 100 per cent renewable energy target by 2025. As part of this, the government is committed to leading by example and working to achieve carbon neutrality in its own operations.
Waste management is an integral part of a sustainable Canberra and is an issue that affects every individual and organisation in the ACT, as is the challenge of climate change more broadly.
We are also focussed on working closely with the community and local businesses to implement efficient waste management solutions. As part of this, since 2009 we have had Reuse-RecycleIT engaged as the government’s ICT disposal broker to help us deliver sustainable solutions for our excess ICT equipment.
As the disposal broker for the ACT Government, Reuse-RecycleIT is engaged to provide services, including:
collection of out of life ICT equipment from ACT Government sites;brokering the best price for equipment on behalf of the Territory; andendeavouring to have no ICT equipment disposed of in landfill.
Reuse-RecycleIT is part of the Capital Easy Group, which is based in Canberra and is a great example of the range of innovative businesses we have in this city. Our partnership with Reuse-RecycleIT has provided significant financial and environmental outcomes for the ACT Government.
