Minister Barr: Easter Sunday to become a public holiday

Released 22/08/2015
Today I announced that the ACT Government will make Easter Sunday a classified public holiday in the ACT, alongside public holidays on Good Friday and Easter Monday.
In my address to the ACT Labor Conference earlier today, I reiterated my Governments opposition to any unfair changes to the weekend penalty rates system.
We need a clear work/life balance to protect precious time with our families and friends, as well as a clear recognition of the cost of having to work outside the traditional, Monday to Friday working week.
Over the coming months, the Cabinet will ensure Easter Sunday in 2016 will be classified as a public holiday in the ACT as it should be.
This is a win for all the hard working emergency services personal, retail and hospitality workers that work on Easter Sunday rather than spending it with their friends and family.
The ACT Government is working to improve conditions of all working Canberrans – and we will continue to oppose the proposals put forward by the Abbott Government to strip away the rights of workers. We are proud to be a government that creates jobs and protects workers.
